ABSTRACT
The future of airports to come, and in turn of airport cities, will be related to several new trends and technological advances. As with many novelties, those airport-related advances have already been imagined and tested in several places. It will be the proliferation and ‘critical mass’ of changes, which might radically shape the functionality, operation, and space of airports and their surroundings. The article discusses the main new trends that may influence airports and airport cities in the near future. Looking at current technological trends, and how they are described and commented on in the literature, we may, with some simplification, describe those under the following themes: improved passenger experience, including improvements of security and sanitary precautions; making the airports more sustainable and green; advances in future transportation and mobility. The article is based on Chapter 6: Future trends for airport cities of the author’s book: AIRPORT CITY – An Urban Design Question (Stangel 2019); with updates taking into account the perspective of the current COVID-19 pandemic.
