ABSTRACT
The development of digitisation translates into a growing use of IT tools in the management of spatial development. For years, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been deployed in support of decisions regarding the assessment of the suitability of land for specific functions. The aim of the study is to present how GIS tools can be used for evaluating the suitability of land for urbanisation purposes on the basis of an overview of 30 articles on this subject published in 2013-2021. The first part of the article describes the methods used in analysing the selected publications. Following this, the study goes on to present the effects of the studies by focusing on the characteristic features of the individual regions of the world, which are identified on the basis of an analysis of the articles selected for the study and by finding common elements across studies of this type. Particular attention is paid to the methodology used by the authors of the publications, which includes the evaluation criteria adopted, the method for weighting them, the scale of the studies, and the quality of the maps that are prepared. The summary presents conclusions made on the basis of the overview of literature. The main findings include differences between the countries in the advancement of studies, the general lack of references to planning issues, the dominance of the AHP model in the weighting of the evaluation criteria, and the good quality of the maps in most of the studies.
